![]() The good news is they probably wouldn't be able to change the film dimensions since they are relying on all the old equipment. I still think they might release their own Spectra model at some point, but it would probably be further in the future after all. Spectras are amazing cameras and have a loyal user base, but I imagine the film was a pretty small part of their overall sales. That sounds true enough considering that's the most profitable part of their product line. I hope this is just paranoia talking, but it's easy for me to believe that this has all been engineered to obfuscate a marketing manoeuvre as a brilliant solution to an intractable problem.Īpparently PO is saying the machines will be decommissioned and they plan to focus on just the square formats. They'll probably even make the film slightly wider to prevent Spectra compatibility, dodge the question of why you couldn't stick the same film in a different pack to use with Spectra, and allow them to market it as being an "improvement" over Spectra. Then, when they introduce i-Type Wide or whatever, they have "solved" the problem. So, they'll discontinue Spectra film, not because sales are low, not because the format is not profitable, not because of any reason they could work with the consumer to fix, but rather because the cameras are breaking down, something which theoretically cannot be addressed by higher film prices, limited runs, pre-orders, etc. If I buy a pack and toss it in the trash, their profit is the same as if I got 8 gorgeous pictures. As long as people keep buying the film it shouldn't matter how their pictures turn out or if they eject properly, as long as PO keeps making money. "Because the cameras are breaking down" is not a reason to cancel a format, it would just be a possible cause of a reason to cancel a format. Most damning of all, they didn't give an actual reason yet as to why they are discontinuing the film. ![]() The Spectra cancellation email even said to look forward to new products.
